"What are you building?"
by Kendall Summerhawk
Every weekend when my brother and I were
little, my dad put us to work helping him build things. We
built a big, brick barbeque large enough to stand in. We
built a log cabin up in the White Mountains. We even made
our own cement mixer which we used to build an adobe brick
house, horse corral, hay storage, and a whole lot of other
things on the 5-acre patch of dirt and cactus south of town
my dad bought.
With building in my veins, it's no
surprise I look at a business the same way. First you get a
clear vision of what you want, then you draw up your
blueprint, buy your materials, and start putting it all
together. Your blueprint get modified as you go along, since
what's on paper rarely matches reality, but if you look at
those events as part of the process, it all adds to the fun
of seeing how something will turn out.
Now, if none of this sounds too exciting,
let me contrast it to the way I watched someone else I knew
go about building something.
First he would get inspired, then go to
the hardware store and buy some stuff. When he got home he
would start measuring, cutting, and hammering. After a
while, there were pieces of wood and building things spread
out under and around the saw horses. A few weeks later some
of the pieces on the ground had managed to make their way up
to being nailed together but into what, I couldn't exactly
say.
Before to long, the bits of wood and
materials were gathered together and stacked out of site,
waiting to be turned into something useful.
The differences between these two
approaches were striking, as were the results. One ended up
creating something tangible you could feel, see, and enjoy
using. The other, well, the other ended up creating a pile
of scrap wood without any real sense of purpose or reason.
My dad never let go of his vision of what
he was building. Every action and decision was focused on
achieving his vision. He didn't say, "I want to build a
house." Instead, he described in detail—first letting his
words paint the picture, then with a detailed
blueprint—every aspect of the house. The shape, number of
windows, floor plan, roof design, ceiling height, you name
it, he had it all figured out.
Is your vision of success that detailed?
Do you know exactly how much you want to work, with whom,
and doing what specific activities? How about knowing
precisely how much (or more) you want to make each year?
What are the specific action steps that cut through the
chaos and move your farther, faster to your goals?
The biggest contribution you can make to
achieving your own success is to have a detailed vision,
vividly described, followed up with specific, bold,
passionate, do-able 90-day goals. Then you can guarantee
your success (really!) when you turn those 90-day goals into
specific actions. Sounds great, doesn't it?!
The good news is you can get all the
expert coaching you need to create your own bold, passionate
vision of success and a detailed blueprint that eliminates
obstacles and aligns your actions with your Unique
Brilliance, guaranteeing your success. I'm only accepting a
very small number of private clients for a HorseWise

The way I look at it is this, if you want
your business to look as beautiful as one of the amazing
houses my dad built (rather than just being a pile of scrap
wood stacked behind the saw horses) then now is the time to
lay your foundation.
It's time to renew your vision, paint a
detailed picture of EXACTLY what you want, and create a
specific blueprint of action steps all aimed towards
achieving 90-day success goals. The results will be a
thriving business that delivers the rich rewards you're
hungry for!
